When it comes to creating a truly livable community, two things stand out — safe, scenic places to walk, and easy ways to get around on two wheels. On Hilton Head Island, those ideals come together beautifully. With 134 miles of shared-use pathways, residents and visitors alike can explore safely and at their own pace.

These scenic trails are designed for everyone — cyclists, walkers, joggers, and those using unicycles, tricycles, scooters, or wheelchairs. However you roll, Hilton Head Island makes it easy to travel securely and enjoy the Lowcountry landscape.

Since 2011, the island has been recognized by the League of American Bicyclists as a Bicycle Friendly Community, earning the Gold Level designation in both 2015 and 2019. That achievement didn’t happen by chance. It’s the result of years of community dedication.

Much of the credit goes to Bike Walk Hilton Head Island, a nonprofit founded in 2006 by local cycling advocates (originally known as the Squeaky Wheels Bicycle Advocacy Group). Their mission? To raise awareness, improve infrastructure, and make biking a natural part of island life. Today, the organization’s initiatives, which are supported by the Hilton Head Island Bicycling Support Fund, include safety education, improved signage, and the well-known Bike Ambassador Program.

We’re especially proud that Jim Hall, owner of The Bike Doctor (recognized as a Silver Bicycle Friendly Business), now serves as the organization’s president. Under his leadership, Bike Walk HHI continues to host events, offer resources like trail maps and tours, and even organized the Southeast’s first regional Biking Symposium.

Whether you’re a longtime local, a returning visitor, or discovering the island for the first time, you’ll quickly see why Hilton Head Island’s combination of bike-friendly paths and pedestrian access makes it one of the most inviting communities anywhere to explore on two feet — or two wheels.
