On July 30, the Hilton Head cycling community gathered to celebrate a milestone — the unveiling of the new pathway and boardwalk at Shelter Cove Community Park, dedicated to Frank Babel in recognition of his decades of advocacy for safe, accessible biking on the island.
Frank’s work has been instrumental in helping Hilton Head achieve Gold-Level Bicycle Friendly Community status through the League of American Bicyclists. His leadership has paved the way — literally and figuratively — for safer pathways, community-wide support, and opportunities for riders of all ages to enjoy the Lowcountry on two wheels.
Our own owner, Jim Hall, was in attendance to honor Frank’s incredible contributions. Jim spoke with WHHI-TV about the importance of bike access for both residents and visitors and shared how Bike Dr strives to keep cycling safe, fun, and accessible year-round.
The new pathway and boardwalk are more than just a beautiful addition to the park — they’re a testament to what can happen when a community comes together to support active, healthy lifestyles. Bike Dr is proud to be part of that ongoing story and to continue building on the vision Frank helped set in motion.
