There’s something about summer on Hilton Head Island that practically begs for a bike ride. Long daylight hours, ocean breezes, shady pathways, and scenic coastal views make two wheels one of the best ways to explore the island. But when temperatures climb, a little planning goes a long way toward keeping your ride comfortable and safe.

So we asked Jim Hall for his top tips, and here is what he told us:

Local riders know that timing matters. Early mornings and evenings are often the sweet spot for biking during the summer months, when the sun isn’t beating down quite as hard and the pavement hasn’t fully heated up. Midday rides can still be enjoyable, but choosing routes with plenty of shade can make a major difference. Areas like the Sea Pines Forest Preserve offer cooler, tree-covered stretches, while Shelter Cove’s waterfront pathways provide breezes and relaxing scenery along the way.

Summer is one of the busiest and most exciting times on Hilton Head Island, which also means more cars sharing the roads. Stay alert when riding near traffic, especially around popular beach access points, shopping areas, and intersections.

Summer is also a good reminder to pay attention to bike maintenance. Hot pavement and changing temperatures can affect tire pressure, so keeping your bike properly adjusted helps create a smoother, safer ride. Slightly lower tire pressure can sometimes improve comfort on warm roads, and routine tune-ups are always a smart idea during seasonal weather changes.

What you wear matters more than many riders realize. Lightweight, breathable fabrics help your body stay cooler, and moisture-wicking athletic materials are especially useful when humidity levels rise. Light-colored clothing reflects sunlight better than darker shades, and surprisingly, long sleeves made from cooling fabrics can sometimes feel more comfortable than sleeveless options because they shield your skin from direct sun exposure.

Sun protection should be part of every ride. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is a must before heading out. Many cyclists now prefer mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide because they create a physical barrier against UV rays while offering dependable protection.

Summer biking on Hilton Head is usually more about enjoying the ride than setting speed records. This is the season for leisurely cruises to the beach, relaxed family rides, and scenic explorations around town. If you want an even easier experience, an electric bike can help reduce strain during especially warm afternoons by adding extra power whenever you need it.

Hydration may be the most important tip of all. Drink water before you leave, bring plenty along for the ride, and keep sipping throughout the day. Electrolyte drinks can also help replenish what you lose in the heat. And on especially hot days, a little water over your head or neck can cool you down surprisingly fast.

Of course, no summer ride is complete without a good pair of sunglasses. Besides protecting your eyes from UV rays, they cut glare from bright roads, sidewalks, and water views, making the ride both safer and more enjoyable.

From beach paths to wooded trails, summer biking remains one of the best ways to experience Hilton Head Island. With a little preparation, a slower pace, and Jim’s excellent advice, you can enjoy every sunny mile comfortably all season long.
